Counselor discussing detox with a patient - drug and alcohol addiction treatment At St. Joseph Institute, our professional medical team provides medical drug and alcohol detoxification for individuals struggling with addiction.

What is drug and alcohol detoxification?

Drug and alcohol detoxification, commonly referred to as detox, is a process that involves safely and systematically removing substances from an individual’s body while managing the associated withdrawal symptoms.

Detoxification is often the first step in the treatment of substance use disorder (SUD) and is designed to help individuals overcome their physical dependence on drugs or alcohol.

It’s important to note that detoxification is just the initial phase of treatment and is usually followed by ongoing therapy and support to address the psychological and behavioral aspects of addiction.

  • Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT): Medications may be prescribed to help manage withdrawal symptoms and reduce discomfort. For example, benzodiazepines might be used to alleviate anxiety and seizures during alcohol withdrawal, or opioid replacement therapy might be used for opioid withdrawal.
  • Continuing Care Plan: After detox, individuals are encouraged to continue with therapy and treatment to address the root causes of their substance use and develop coping strategies for maintaining sobriety.
